Today’s Name Day is
Swedes like to celebrate. So with a Name Day Calendar you can celebrate not only your “birth” day but your “name” day as well! Extra coffee and cake for you on your name’s day! Today there are so many new names that a name’s day calendar can’t possibly list all the names. The traditional names listed here reflect old Norse culture as well as earlier influences of Christianity. If you know anyone with a name similar to one listed here, surprise them with a “happy name’s day” greeting or sing them “Happy Birthday” in Swedish (Ja, må du leva)! I knew a man with this name. What memories this triggered. When I was almost a teenage we always would gather at the local drugstore or the bakery. Clemmie was always there. He was a huge huge man. He walked but barely. But he would start the afternoon with coffee with the men at the bakery. Then meet us kids at the drugstore later. When he died there was not a casket large enough to hold his gigantic body. They had to bury him in a piana crate.
Today I am thankful for: Marsha
Thought for today: Where you used to be, there is a hole in the world, which I find myself constantly walking around in the daytime, and falling in at night. I miss you like hell. ~Edna St Vincent Millay
Strange Fact of the Day: There are 2 million Americans (1 out of every 142) in prison. The US has the highest incarceration rate of any country in the world.
I had a horrid nite of trying to sleep. I coughed so hard I thought I would be sick. I ache from coughing. I swear even my hair hurts!!
I skipped swedish group today. I needed more sleep. And that did help. Now I have crawled into work at the Red Barn. I pray no one comes in today.
We got sooo cold last nite. It hit 15F at my house. Now there is actually snow on the way. Maybe 2″ total. I am turning into a great cynic. I will not believe it or get excited until I see it.
I heard something on CNN the other day that actually has me worried. They were talking about fuel. Gas is getting expensive here & I sort of don’t think about it. I still come & go as I please. But an expert or analyst stated that if we make a move on Iran it could cause reactions in them that send the price of fuel to $200 barrel — over twice what it is now. I know in Europe they pay much more for fuel than we do but they also drive safe & fuel efficient cars. My times in Sweden I have never seen a pickup or SUV on the roads. Pickups are on the farms, where they belong. I would not drive my car over there & should not here. But I did not pick out this car nor do I ever get to voice an opinion about what we drive. My son last week filled his semi tractor with diesel & he had to hand over $700!! That is outrageous. If it doubles, he says he will park the truck. Most companies reimburse some of his fuels costs but they are threatening to stop. He assures me that the price of everything will start going up soon. He hauls mostly food & says groceries must get more expensive. If fuel doubles, I will for sure think several times before I head out the door for a lunch here or there.
Willie has a new friend. Kitty has decided to pick of the slack left by Ruffa. She now follows him as he feeds cattle, works around the yard, etc. I teased him that soon she will be riding with him in the truck! He assures me that will never happen! Not that he does not like Kitty, but he just wants his dog back, not a cat.
I looked at some dogs online in Saline County & in Barton County. Nothing. We truly want a Border Collie puppy. Purebred. Nothing else mixed in. Especially not Australian Shepherd. Too high energy. We are too old for that kind of dog. Did see some dachund, australian shepherd, & something else mix puppies that were really cute. Maybe one of them would be ok, but he was not interested.
Be well, do good work, and keep in touch!
