- active and playful (she races around the yard, the house, etc.)
- are physically similar to a small greyhound (same body shape as one)
- quiet and gentle dogs, and may be content to spend much of the day resting (unless racing in the yard or riding in the truck)
- friendly to visitors (tries to leave with the UPS man)
- tend to attack cats that stray into their territory (we and Kitty have noticed)
- females can be a little more complex and strong-willed (Willie can vouch for this)
- coats do not provide insulation to withstand prolonged periods in cold temperatures (staking her claim to the recliner now)
- most at home in the company of their owners–in their lap or lying next to them ( and how)
- it is difficult to instill any sort of traffic sense into them (she runs in front of the tractor, the lawnmower, the truck. Got hit by the mower but never phased her)
- heart of a whippet is large and slow beating, often being arrhythmic or even intermittent when the animal is at rest. This sometimes causes concern to the owner, or to the vet not experienced with the breed. Whippets will, however, demonstrate a regular heartbeat during exercise
- Whippet sleeping in the ‘cockroach’ position characteristic of sighthounds (photos to follow)
