~Varmt välkommen hit~

I have no idea what was going on at the airport in Salina last nite, but about 3x I heard jet extremely loud. I do not know if it was flying overhead or simply revving its engines. The first time I almost thought it was flying low over our farm, hoping it was not crashing. The Salina airport is the longest in the US. Many planes come here to practice flying —- from planes from Northwest Airlines to military planes to the last new Airforce One. They usually are never this loud.
We were in a heavy fog warning this morning. Willie said it was pretty heavy when Jo made him get up. I saw 100F this afternoon & it is beyond miserable. Very little breeze & so much humidity in the air you can feel it. Hard to walk or breathe. And we are now in a heat warning for friday through monday. I am soooo excited. NOT.
I had my eyes checked today. All was fine. Being diabetic I have to have them dilated every year also. New drops this year. Only needed one in each eye instead of 2, but it has given me quite a headache. I can barely read the text here & the sun is unbearable. I always have to have someone drive me.

Be well, do good work, keep in touch!

Irv Gordon suggests nine great towns to drive to this summer

IRVINE, Calif.  – Irv Gordon — who as the first person to drive two million miles in the same car and has taken more road trips than anybody — has some advice for families preparing a summer vacation on the road: ditch the fancy resorts and theme parks and take a drive to a small town.

Gordon, a retired science teacher from Long Island, New York, clocked his historic two millionth mile in his shiny red 1966 Volvo P1800 in 2002 while driving down Times Square in New York City. He is only 300,000 miles from reaching the 3 million mile mark. Gordon gets his kicks driving his Volvo on Route 66 and just about every other picturesque highway in the United States. He estimates he has stopped at more than 5,000 small towns in this car over the past 42 years for coffee and conversations with the locals.

“Folks are anxious to have a relaxing, inexpensive summer vacation under the warm sun,” Gordon said. “Make it easy on yourself this year and get off the gridlocked interstates. Take a state highway toward one of our thousands of peaceful small towns. Each small town is a gem, packed with bizarre attractions, important history and plenty of fun.”

Gordon suggests nine great towns (some with a Swedish twist) to drive to this summer:

  • Newburyport, Mass. “This small town, birthplace of the U.S. Coast Guard, is just a few miles north ofBoston and has a rich maritime history heritage. You can still find shipyards, as well as New England style saltbox homes and rather large federal and colonial style homes all over town. Be sure to visit Lowell’s Boat Shop, the country’s oldest boat building business still in operation.”
  • Shelburne, Vt. “This beautiful area is nestled between the mountains and Lake Champlain. It’s home to the Shelburne Museum, the Vermont Teddy Bear Company, Shelburne Farms and the Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream factory.”
  • Lindsborg, Kan. (a.k.a. Little Sweden) “Lindsborg is a real taste of Sweden hidden 150 miles west ofKansas City. The town is beautiful, neat as a pin and the townsfolk are just as friendly as can be. Swedish pancakes and other specialties are served in almost every restaurant in town. Swedish Midsommer celebrations with Swedish folk dancing take place in June each year. Don’t forget to stop by the bison ranch nearby and check out the wildlife.”
  • Mitchell, S.D. “Home of the Corn Palace. It’s a building like you have never seen before. Approximately 275,000 ears of corn, as well as other grains, stalks and grasses cover the building’s exterior, forming elaborate murals designed by local artists. The murals are changed periodically, but always depict local history. If you want to get the feel of a real, old western town this is a terrific place to start.”
  • Wamego, Kan. ”This small town’s claim to fame is the Oz Museum. The attraction contains more than 2,000 Oz artifacts dating back to 1900. If you loved the story of Dorothy and Toto, you will love spending time here. Wamego is another friendly, Midwest town with welcoming residents.”
  • New Sweden, Stockholm and Westmanland, Maine ”These three tiny towns, first settled by 51 immigrants from Sweden, boast a rich Swedish heritage and easily allow you to ‘get away from it all.’ If you live in the Northeast and feel a drive to Lindsborg, Kan. (Little Sweden) is a bit far, this will give you a bit of Swedish hospitality closer to home.”
  • Groveland, Calif. “This former gold-mining town of the 1840s is home to the oldest continually operating saloon in California and sits 30 miles from the entrance to Yosemite National Park. Amidst beautiful woods and lakes, the town is at the top of Priest Grade, a road once used to haul gold down the mountain and one of the steepest inclined roads in the U.S. Just the ride up the mountain is worth the trip.”
  • Vermilion, Ohio “Here you’ll find New England charm on the shores of Lake Erie and the Vermilion River. Lighthouse and sailboat enthusiasts will be right at home. Stores, shops and the Inland Seas MaritimeMuseum remind you of decades past. During the summer months, you can hear concerts and sample hand dipped ice cream cones in the town square. Don’t forget to visit Thomas Edison’s birthplace in Milan, just a few miles away.”
  • East Sweden, Texas ”This is another Swedish heritage spot, now considered a ghost town. If you like getting a bit off the beaten path and seeing things as they used to be, this would be a great choice. It’s easy to reach on U.S. Route 190 in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The town remains show what happened when the railroad by-passed the settlement almost 100 years ago.”

Gordon purchased his P1800 in June 1966 from a neighborhood Volvo dealership for $4,150. His 125-mile daily commute to and from work, his passion for driving and his meticulous care for his car enabled him to clock the miles. In 1998, The Guinness Book of World Records honored Gordon’s car as the vehicle with the “highest certified mileage driven by the original owner in non-commercial service.” Gordon breaks his own world record every time he drives his celebrated car. With nearly 2.7 million miles on his car now, Gordon is aiming to achieve a near impossible milestone – driving three million miles in the same car.

~Varmt välkommen hit~

Multiply stuff: First, twice a contact has posted a blogg entry. It has appeared on my list twice. One I can delete. The other one is there forever appearing to be unread. Does not bother anything, just a curiosity.  Second, one of my contacts posts many blogg entries. I was reading & commenting faithfully. Then I realised that never ever does this person read/comment on my blogg. May be time to do some housecleaning.
Spent the morning working on faxes & then resending them on. Pretty easy stuff. Even used a new company that did not send us the usual 20 pages of crap to fill out & fax back. Rather nice. A simple contract & a request for what we send to all new companies is enough. I could care less where they bank or all their federal id numbers, etc. I just pitch it all.
The rain is over for us until next week & here comes the heat again. Usch.
I worked this afternoon. I worked on a few thank you’s, logged in some toys in our database, redid a sheet listing all the eating places in town. I said goodbye to our artist in residence. She will be gone when I go in next. Do not know the next one. She is new to us.
I have gained with the kittens. I walked out the front door & neither of them ran for cover. Last nite the both almost walked up to me. Almost.

Be well, do good work, keep in touch!

Rain & kittens 7-29-08

Rain & kittens 7-29-08 Jul 29, ‘08 1:24 PM
for everyone

Our weather is quite nice. It started to thunder around 2am. We have had rain but not too much. The upside is it is only 74F. Ahhhhh. We will pay later when it heats up the humidity will be 10x worse & the 100F+ will feel worse. But today, ahhhhhhhhhh. Although the temps stayed down it did get a little humid in the afternoon.
Nothing for me today. Have a long list of things to do but think I will take a nap. Just cannot get motivated to do anything.
I have a nice arrangement of silk flowers on our porch. I keep finding pieces of it all over the yard. I blamed Jo. Not her. The kittens climb into the middle of it to fight. (sigh) Will redo it when they have grown up. I finally cleaned the glass so I can take photos through the door. The results are above.
Jo now spends every afternoon in the pasture running, jumping, barking. There is nothing there. Nothing. I wonder if the spirits she sees in the house play with her outside??

Be well, do good work, keep in touch!

Wind & clouds… 7-28-08

Wind & clouds… 7-28-08 Jul 28, ‘08 10:37 AM
for everyone

The weather is supposed to be very hot again but it stayed cloudy with light rainy. It stayed much cooler & quite nice, just some high winds. The weatherman has also forecast us to be cooler on tuesday. Cooler meaning low 90s instead of upper 90s. Obviously their idea of cooler & my idea of cooler do not come close.
I spent the afternoon in Salina having my hair cut/coloured/styled. I should have my hair done more often. It looks better. And it is nice to be pampered for a short time.
On the way home I bought some BBQ’d beef for supper. A place in town, Hickory Hut, has the best beef ever. We had fresh roasting ears for lunch. One of the few good things about summer.

Be well, do good work, keep in touch!

Söndag/sunday 7-27-08

Söndag/sunday 7-27-08 Jul 27, ‘08 8:54 PM
for everyone

The weather remains hot & humid. Last nite we had 1.5 inches is just a few minutes. Clouds are building in the west so maybe rain later.
We went to Salina last nite to eat & celebrate. We went to Tucson’s & I had bacon wrapped grilled shrimp. To Die For!
Last nite the fan in our car quit working. But then at noon today it started. I wonder if some got caught in the fan blades?

I drove Bryan to Roxbury to sing at the church there. What a sweet, lovely church. I plan to go back. The people were all very friendly. Falun has a little church too. I used to belong. But now it is hardly a sweet place to be. It is more like The Pastor E**** Show —– Come on down!!! There is nothing quiet, reverent, religious or meditative about it.

After church Bryan & I had time to catch a quick lunch at Jalisco’s. My favourite place to be. Bryan is a blessing in my life. I am grateful to have him.

Then it was work for me. Marsha came so we had a long chat. That was good. And she made me laugh. I needed that. No tours today. But our artist in residence was there with her husband. We talked long after it was time for me to leave.

Be well, do good work, keep in touch!
