I started that day by attending the First Baptist Church in town. The church has decorations of stuff jungle animals in preparations for vacation bible school. They had a men’s quartet that sang. They were pretty awesome!
We left church before the sermon. Sally has had a family reunion this weekend & they had a farewell dinner today in Abilene at the historic Brookville Hotel. Originally it was in Brookville KS but they were forced to move. They rebuilt a replica of the original in Abilene. Many of the things in it are from the old one. They only serve one meal & they serve it family style. You get peaches, apples, pickles, & cold slaw for starters. Then fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, creamed corn, & biscuits. The meal ends with ice cream.

Then we took a drive to Chapman KS to see the tornado damage. OMG! It was so sad. One house was still pretty badly damaged but the owner was mowing the lawn. The schools suffered $20 million in damages. There is an old historic stone church that was hit. A lot of the walls are still up so they may be able to still have parts of the original in the new one. They were cutting wheat on the edge of town — life goes on — but the combines were having to dodge debris blown in the field. See all the photos of Chapman
here. The poor trees here in Kansas suffered so much damage last december in our ice storm. Even with leaves you can see the damage. And now so many have been hurt by storms this summer. It will be years before they look normal again.
Then we drove to Council Grove KS & drove around the lake there. It is lovely. I saw a place where anyone could sit & I may have to go back just to enjoy the water, the scenery, etc. The lake has homes around the edges of it.
Then we took the back roads home. Nice to see scenery instead of traffic. And some cool homes & many wildflowers.
Willie has been plowing fire guards so he can burn our wheat fields this week. We talked about the price of fuel. Every day that we cut wheat it cost us $700 for fuel. We cut for around 8 days total. That is a grand total of $5600 spent immediately. That’s gonna lower our bottom line.
As we drove, it was partly sunny & hot. We saw 101F in the car. Takes your breath away.
