The Svenska Vänskaps Gruppen met Friday, February 25, 2011, at 10:00am in the Martin Luther Room at Bethany Lutheran Church. Fifteen members were present & one guest. Members present were Julie-Ann, Inga-Lill, Charlotte, Doris, Emery, Maj-Britt, Gem, Chet, Jeanette, Alice, Ione, Jim, Linda, and Kathryn. Our guest was Carolyn from Assaria.
It was surprising that we had so many attend with the weather we had yesterday. We had light rain. And thunder. Then heavy ice pellets. And more thunder. Ending with snow and strong winds. Maybe about 2 inches of ice pellets/snow on the ground. Roads were so-so. Not as slick as just ice but still covered with ice and snow.
Our hostess today was Ione. She served cinnamon rolls and cheese. Delicious!!! Our hostesses next week Maj-Britt and Inga-Lill.
Julie-Ann opened the meeting with a greeting på svenska. We then prayed together Fader vår. That is the Lord’s Prayer in Swedish. Then we sang together Du gamla, du fria. That is the Swedish National Anthem. We sing 2 verses in Swedish. Gem is our pianist.
The chickens are laying again, so Brenda let us know there are eggs to be bought in the church office. Check there for free range eggs.
Gem read a letter to the editor about supporting the arts in Kansas. There is a group who want to cut all funding to the arts, among many other things. This writer had done a lot of research. It costs each citizen of Kansas less than one penny in tax money to make sure we have art, music, and much more in Kansas. Well worth it.
We got news that a former member’s wife fell and broke her ankle. We all wish her well. Had surgery today.
Jeanette brought a huge book about Sweden to share with us. She and Chet are starting to sell on eBay and this is one of their listings.
Julie-Ann reported that Bishop Esbjörn Hagberg from Karlstad Sweden who spent time in Lindsborg a year or so ago has started a blogg. Here is the link to it. Find it here: http://blogg.svenskakyrkan.se/biskopesbjorn/ The bishop was one of the Pearson professors at Bethany College.
Our program today was a short video on Copenhagen. It is in two parts and we just watched the first part. Copenhagen looks to be a beautiful and interesting city.
Our next meeting we are trying something new. We will meet in the Lindsborg Community Library in the Swedish Room. There will be food but all must bring their own drinks. Not going to haul our coffee pots there. Way too much work. We will spend the hour looking at Swedish books and sharing if we find something cool. A new adventure I hope works out well. And that we will continue to meet there the first friday of each month. Wish us luck! Lycka till!!
We meet every Friday morning at 10am at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Lindsborg KS. We almost always meet in the Martin Luther Room. Everyone is welcome to join us for an hour of ‘fika’ – coffee & food with friends – & a program. Previous knowledge of the Swedish language is not necessary! No one is even close to being fluent!!! Except the ‘real’ Swedes!
